Keith, Emma and Chris (centre three) completed the 280 mile journey from Liverpool to Hull on their bikes to help raise funds for the Hull Freedom Trail, in a joint corporate challenge with staff from Greens' the Sign-makers.


Keith Warner MSc, MCSP, Clinical & Managing Director

Keith qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 1984. Following which he spent 4 years working in the NHS and as a part-time physio to Hull Kingston Rovers , whilst also completing a post graduate year in Pure Biomechanics at Strathclyde University.

In May 1988 he joined the Football Association Rehabilitation & Human Performance Centre at Lilleshall. The Centre is a full time residential rehabilitation facility, predominantly caring for British professional soccer players, but also international athletes from a variety of sports. The experience of sports rehabilitation & exercise science support at Lilleshall culminated in the completion of a Masters Degree in Sport and Health Related Exercise Science .

Subsequent to the years at the Football Association, an interesting 15 year period followed working as head physiotherapist for Hull RLFC (Rugby League), Scarborough FC (Soccer), and Hull City AFC (Soccer). The experience of comparing and contrasting the two sports he lists as one of his unique experiences. In total he has an ongoing 25 years in Rugby League and 15 years in professional soccer. In 2006 he completed a six year spell travelling the world as the Great Britain Rugby League Physiotherapist .

Commencing in 1996, he continues to direct the sports medicine for all age groups of Great Britain Ice Hockey, providing medical support at their annual World Championships. He currently sits on the British Olympic Association - Physiotherapy Committee preparing for the London 2012 Olympics . Other notable posts and experiences include 6 years physio for the World XI cricket team , 'Medical team leader' at the World Student Games - Sheffield 1991 and personally training and medically supporting 'World Champion Boxers' and contenders from the Yorkshire region.

Since 1990 he has been a clinical consultant to Smith & Nephew Healthcare Ltd with a variety of roles including teaching, product design, worldwide education and research. Presenting to various clinical groups, conferences and researchers provides him with 20 years at the cutting edge of health science.

Since 1996 he has clinically directed Warners, working in partnership with the Hull City Council. This is a strategic effort to provide an exercise opportunity and the subsequent health benefits, to the various socioeconomic populations across his home city of Hull.

Lastly he would like to say that he is very grateful to have had such a fortunate career thus far and that he does triathlons and marathons very badly!


Rehabilitation Staff

Mick Matthews, Physical Therapist.

Mick has had a long career on both sides of the sideline within sport. From 1976 he spent 18 years as a successful Professional Footballer. His former clubs include Wolverhampton Wanderers, Scunthorpe, Halifax, Scarborough, Stockport, Hull City, and Kitchee / Kui Tan (Hong Kong).

Since he "hung up his boots" in the playing sense, he has used his experience and understanding to carve out a career combining his knowledge and skills in sports therapy and coaching. In September 1996 he began work as a sports therapist at the Hull Sports Medicine Centre, later to develop as Warners. During this time he has spent five years as 1 st Team Sports Therapist for Hull City AFC, seven years as Great Britain U18 Ice Hockey Sports Therapist, and enjoyed an interesting role as St Vincent & Grenadines Assistant Football Coach / Therapist in their qualification campaign for the World Cup 2006.

From 1997 he has developed his coaching roles and is now a Course Tutor / Assessor for Level 2 & 3 UEFA Football Awards. He is highly regarded in this role and is employers include, East Riding County FA, West Riding County FA, Manchester County FA, and The Football Association - Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

He also passes on his sports therapy experience working as a course Tutor / Assessor for 1 st Aid 4 sport, teaching the Basic & Intermediate Treatment of Injuries Certificate for East Riding County F.A, York College of F.E. and Wilberforce College of F.E.

He continues his own many sporting interests today, which include cycling, triathlons, running, and skiing.

Don Lyall, Physical Therapist.

Don joined Warners from the opening of the centre in February 2002, having previously supported Keith providing match day cover and injury assessment and rehabilitation at all levels with Hull City AFC and Hull RLFC. He has continued his role as a rehabilitator in the previous six years, whilst also working as the Great Britain U20 and/or U18 Ice Hockey physiotherapist at their annual championships.

He has developed his understanding of health-related exercise, completing his GP exercise on referral qualification, and advanced exercise instructor at NVQ level 3. He also holds a level 3 certificate in childrens' physical activity and exercise.

His own background lies largely in football, having spent time coaching and playing. He enjoys maintaining his own fitness through running and cycling.

Chris Smith, Sports Masseur and Physical Therapist.

Chris joined Warners in 2002 in combined massage/rehabilitator role. He has supported Keith providing match day cover and injury assessment and rehabilitation for Hull Kingston Rovers, Hull Stingrays and Hull RLFC.

He has continued to develop his role as a rehabilitator in the previous six years, whilst also working as the Great Britain Women's Ice Hockey Physiotherapist at their annual world championships.

He has continued his professional development, completing his GP exercise on referral qualification, and advanced exercise instructor at NVQ level 3.

His own background lies largely in athletics coaching and keeping himself active through cycling.

His professional qualifications include:

Emma Barraclough BSc, Exercise Scientist.

Emma joined Warners in September 2005, having completed her sports and exercise science degree at Leeds Metropolitan University in the summer of 2005.

She has continued her professional development by completing gym instructor, GP Exercise on referral, and nutrition and weight management qualifications. In April 2007 she completed the BACR Cardiac Rehabilitation qualification, and has set up a Phase IV service within Warners.

Her role at the centre involves delivering musculoskeletal rehabilitation, exercise prescription, fitness testing, dietary analysis, cardiac rehabilitation and health screening, both at the centre and within the workplace. She has also been the Great Britain U20 Ice Hockey physiotherapist since December 2006.

Events/Football Co-ordinator

Lee Atkinson

Lee joined Warners from the opening of the centre in February 2002. Since then he has operated in a multi-faceted role at the centre. He co-coordinates football events including corporate events, junior Futsal, and 5 a-side leagues.

He also coordinates events in the café-bar and other social activities at the centre. He has considerable experience in the bar and catering sector.


Clinical & Sports Masseurs

Janet Horncastle

Janet began work as a sports masseur at the Hull Sports Medicine Centre, later to develop as Warners. During this time she built up considerable experience working within the centre and providing match day cover at Hull City AFC and Hull RLFC.

She has also held notable posts in March 2004 at the INAS-FID World Athletics Championships, July 2004 at the Global Games, January 2005 European Cross Country Championships and European Indoor Athletics Championships in March 2005.
